2008 Lookout Mountain Hall of Fame
Sunday August 17 (4:00 PM)

Highlighted by All-Americans, national champions, civic leaders and sports administrators, the Lookout Mountain Hall of Fame’s class of 2008 will be inducted on Sunday, August 17 at 4 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain School gym.

The 10-member class represents a variety of sports including basketball, football, golf, running, softball, tennis and track and field.

Class of 2008: Marilyn Voges Brown, Dr. Charlotte Grant, Alex Guerry Jr., Jack Lupton, Bob Klein Sr., Joe McGinness Sr., Hugh Morrow Sr., Teresa Lawrence Phillips, Buck Stamps and Dave Telford.

The honorees were selected by a vote of the Lookout Mountain Memorial Community Center Board.

‘‘This induction class is an outstanding group of Lookout Mountain citizens who have competed at a high level and made significant contributions for the benefit of others involved in sports,’’ said Rick Dockery, chairman of the hall of fame board. “We know that the continuation of the Hall of Fame is a meaningful and positive reflection upon our community.’’

The inaugural hall of fame class – Zan Guerry, Bill Healy, Lew Oehmig, Betty Probasco, Nick Senter, Bill Spears and Roscoe Tanner – was inducted in 1991.

Note: Buck Stamps Memorial Service. The memorial service for Buck Stamps, who died in March, will be Sunday, August 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. The Lookout Mountain Hall of Fame will start at 4 p.m, at Lookout Mountain School.

MARILYN VOGES BROWN – (Tennis) … First woman to play on a men’s college tennis team … four-year starter for Chattanooga, 1958-1961 … Played No. 2 singles most of her career … 1959 UC Homecoming Queen … Best Female Athlete at City High School (1957) and UC (1958) … teaching pro at Lookout Mountain Playground for 25 years … former tennis coach at GPS … Graduate of City High School and UC … Halls of Fame: Chattanooga, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tennessee Tennis.

DR. CHARLOTTE GRANT – (Golf) … First LPGA tour player from Tennessee; 1983, 1984 … 1980 regional All-American at Wake Forest … 1981 Wake Forest Female Athlete of the Year ... led The Deacons two a pair of national championships in 1980 (NCAIAW) and 1982 (AIAW) ... national runner-up in individual play in 1980 ... first TSSAA state champion in girls golf, 1975 … led GPS to four state titles, 1975-76-77-78 … two-time Chattanooga Women’s City Champion … graduate of Lookout Mountain Elementary, GPS, Wake Forest … PhD in architecture from Georgia Tech (2003) ... Halls of Fame: GPS, Chattanooga.
ALEX GUERRY Jr. (posthumously) – (Tennis) … Two-time national father-son champion (1967, 1971) with oldest son, Zan … national leader in USTA junior tennis … valedictorian at Baylor (1935) and Sewanee (1939) … Tennessee state college champion in singles (2), doubles (1) … 1938 SEC finalist in singles … Chattanooga city champion; singles (10), doubles (21) … Halls of Fame: Baylor School, Chattanooga, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tennessee Tennis, Southern Tennis.
BOB KLEIN Sr. (posthumously) – (Track & Field/Football) … Two-time football All-American (’35, ’36) at the University of Chattanooga … three-time All-Dixie Conference … first and only recipient of the President’s Award presented by UC President Alex Guerry Sr. … two-time athlete of the year at the state college track and field meet (T.I.A.A.) … state champion in the discus (twice), 100 yard dash and broad jump … nine letters in football, basketball and track and field … Halls of Fame: Chattanooga, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

JACK LUPTON – (Golf) … Driving force behind building The Honors Course, Golf House Tennessee (Nashville) and the Chattanooga Aquarium … civic leader in revitalization of downtown Chattanooga … Baylor School Distinguished Alumni Award … created, named and twice won the Swing Ding golf tournament … lettered in football, swimming and baseball at Baylor … Halls of Fame: Tennessee, Chattanooga, Tennessee Golf.
JOE McGINNESS Sr. – (posthumously) (Running) ... Two-time winner of Boston Marathon (1978, 1979) in his age group (60s+) …founding member of the Chattanooga Track Club … 1935 recipient of McCallie’s second highest award, the Campbell Award …president of freshman and senior classes …student commander of the military program … lettered in track at McCallie and Vanderbilt … second in the Mid South meet in the mile run (1935) … also second in the state college meet (T.I.A.A.) in the mile run for the ’Dores in 1939 … three year team captain at Vandy (1937-39) … Hall of Fame: Chattanooga.

HUGH MORROW Sr. – (Football) …1945 NCAA champion in kick scoring (45 of 45 extra points) at Alabama … set national records for points scored by a kicker in a season and career …Played in three bowls games (Sugar, 2) and Rose) … Sugar Bowl record (current) for longest interception return for a touchdown (75 yards) in 1945 … kicked four extra points in 34-14 win against Southern Cal in 1946 Rose Bowl … honorable mention All-American in baseball as a freshman … Earned nine varsity letters at Alabama; football (4), baseball (4), basketball (1) … All-City and second team All-state in football at Phillips High School (Birmingham).
TERESA LAWRENCE PHILLIPS – (Sports Administration) – Athletics Director at Tennessee State University ... First woman to coach an NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball team … In 2003, was one of the ‘‘101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports’’ by Sports Illustrated … USA Today National Coach of the Year in 1990 …Two-time Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year … Former head women’s basketball coach at TSU and Fisk (15 years, 218-185) and two NCAA appearances … Lettered in basketball at Vanderbilt …Led the ‘Dores in rebounding (9.7 rbpg) as a junior in 1979 … 1980 Vanderbilt Female Athlete of the Year … graduate of Lookout Mountain Elementary, GPS and Vandy … Hall of Fame: GPS.

BUCK STAMPS (posthumously) – (Recreation Leader) … Recreation director at Lookout Mountain School as and The Playground for 40 years, 1956-1995 … Walt Lauter Award for lifetime service in sports from the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame … 2008 Lookout Mountain Dixie Youth Baseball regular season is dedicated to Buck … Lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Breman (Ga.) High School … Stamps was a running back for UC coach Scrappy Moore for three seasons (1950-51-52) … Co-leader in scoring (42 points) as a senior in 1952 … 13 career touchdowns … Hall of Fame: Breman, Ga.
DAVE TELFORD – (Basketball/Softball) … All-State in basketball at Jackson County (Ala.)
